Please carefully review the GLPC Style Sheet PDF prior to submission. If you would like to find out which concepts are currently available or being prioritized, please click here DOCX.

General guidelines related to the Style Sheet are as follows:

  1. The ideal length for an entry will depend on the concept. In general, entries should be no shorter than 3,500 words and no longer than 8,500 words.
  2. Entries should be idea-driven, focusing on philosophical problems and the internal logic of their solutions.
  3. Where appropriate, entries should cite instructive examples from Goethe's literary works to illustrate how concepts unfold and work.
  4. Entries should strive to be balanced in their discussions. They should avoid advocating a single point-of-view about a concept or a particular interpretation of Goethe or some other thinker, but rather survey the range of approaches to the concept.
  5. Explanatory references in notes are allowed, but authors should be judicious about their use.
  6. Endnotes and bibliography should follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
  7. Links to other reference works and data-bases (e.g., Goethe-Wörterbuch, Grimm, Goethes Werke, etc.) may be included.
  8. Accurate English translations should be provided. Poetry should be offered in prose renderings.
  9. While GLPC entries may occasionally draw on content that authors have previously published, such material should be treated according to the same citational conventions that regulate the use of material written by others. Small excerpts are allowable to the extent they are integrated into the genre of a lexicon-entry, but entries should not duplicate lengthy passages or arguments verbatim.
